These two models are chosen against each other more often than any other pair on our list. The difference on paper is small — one kilogram of wrist payload and about 340 mm of reach — but it decides whether you need a track, and whether you can add a second gun later.
The specification difference
| GR6150-2900 | GR6160-3200 | |
|---|---|---|
| Wrist payload | 15 kg | 16 kg |
| Reach | 2,900 mm | 3,240 mm |
| ATEX certificate | CML 20ATEX1065X, IIC | Covered by the GR6150 series certificate — variant coverage to be confirmed |
| Chinese Ex certificate | CE20.50037, expired 2025-02-12; renewal requested | Not on file |
| Typical use | Car body sides, bumpers, cabs from a fixed base | Long flat panels, furniture fronts, wide conveyorised work |
When the extra reach earns its price
- The part is wider than the robot can cover from one standing position, and adding a track would cost more than the model upgrade.
- The robot must clear a conveyor, a hanger or a booth structure to get to the far face — reach spent on clearance is reach not available for the part.
- You expect a longer part in the next programme. Reach margin is cheaper bought now than as a model change later.
When it does not
- You are already planning a seventh axis. Then reach buys nothing the track does not, and the shorter arm is faster and stiffer at the same point.
- The parts are deep rather than wide. Getting inside a recess is a wrist and approach-angle problem, not a reach problem.
- Certification governs. The GR6150-2900 has a published certificate number; on the GR6160-3200 the variant coverage is to be confirmed against the series certificate scope, and for an ATEX project that difference outweighs 340 mm.
The honest recommendation
Start from the delivered evidence. Four GR6150-2900 robots run a car-body line at 23 jobs per hour, and five more were configured for a plastic-parts line at 12 base colours — that model has the most project history behind it in our own records.
Choose the GR6160-3200 when the geometry genuinely needs the reach and the certification route allows it. Otherwise the GR6150-2900 with a track, or with a better mounting position, is usually the cheaper answer to the same problem.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upgrade the reach later?
No — reach is fixed by the arm. What can be added later is a linear track, which is why we ask about the next part programme before the current one is quoted.
Is 1 kg of payload ever the deciding factor?
Occasionally, when a 2K in-arm mixer or a second applicator is planned. Add up the real wrist load — gun, lines with paint in them, trigger valve, mixer, bracket — before deciding.
Which has the better certificate position today?
The GR6150-2900: ATEX certificate CML 20ATEX1065X is published with its number. Its Chinese certificate expired in February 2025 and the renewal has been requested; we state that rather than leaving it out.
