Explosion-proof collaborative robots, compared honestly

A cobot in a paint booth is a good idea for a job shop that paints a hundred different parts a month and a bad idea for a body shop that paints one part every forty seconds. The table below lists every certified explosion-proof cobot we know of, with the Ex marking and the certificate number, so your safety engineer can check them. We supply these on request and integrate them with the same pre-integration and factory acceptance test as any other cell; where we do not hold the datasheet, the figure says so.

Not a cobot — an Ex industrial six-axis and an Ex mobile chassis, for the projects where the cobot checklist below says no.

"To be verified" means we have not yet read the certificate ourselves. Nothing marked that way goes into a quotation until we have. Manufacturers listed here are not represented by us; models are supplied and integrated on request.

Cobot or industrial painting robot? The honest split

A cobot fits when

  • Parts change often and programming by hand-guiding saves hours a week
  • Cycle time is minutes, not seconds
  • The booth is shared with people most of the day
  • Payload after gun and hoses stays under about 5 kg
  • Zone 2, or Zone 1 with a IIC whole-system certificate in hand

An industrial Ex painting robot fits when

  • Conveyor tracking and takt time decide the line
  • Reach above 1.5 m or upper-arm process equipment is needed
  • Rotary bells, 2K mixing or colour change in the arm
  • ATEX for an EU-aligned site — the GR series holds it
  • Shared manual booth with long runs — the SR portable series

Seven questions before an Ex cobot is specified

  1. Whole machine, not just the arm. The certificate must cover arm, controller and teach pendant as one system. An Ex arm with a standard cabinet outside the zone needs a certified cable gland and barrier concept — ask for the drawing.
  2. Gas group IIB or IIC. Solvent paints are IIA/IIB; hydrogen and acetylene are IIC. IIC covers IIB, never the other way round.
  3. Temperature class. T4 (135 °C) suits most solvents; low-ignition-point materials may need T5 or T6. The dust class (T130 °C, T95 °C, T80 °C) is a separate figure for Zone 21/22.
  4. Zone 1 or Zone 2. Gb equipment is for Zone 1; Gc for Zone 2 only. A booth with solvent spray at the gun is Zone 1 at the spray position.
  5. Purge and pressurisation (pxb). Purge time, air consumption and the pressure-loss interlock belong in the specification, and the purge air supply is your scope on site.
  6. Payload after the tooling. Subtract the gun, hoses and Ex enclosure from the rated payload before comparing models; on a 6 kg arm the remainder is small.
  7. Veto items. No whole-system certificate, no IIC when the atmosphere is IIC, no dust marking where powder is present, a certificate that has expired or names a different factory — any one of these ends the discussion.

Non-explosion-proof collaborative robots

For handling, machine tending, screwing, palletizing of light packs and quality inspection outside a hazardous zone, the EFORT ECR5 is the collaborative arm we supply from stock knowledge; other cobot brands are quoted per project against the requirement survey. The survey for machine tending and the one for palletizing both have a section for collaborative operation and the risk assessment it requires.
