Robot or reciprocator for flat and panel work?

Not every coating job needs six axes. A reciprocator moves a bank of guns in a straight line and covers flat, conveyorised work extremely economically. The interesting cases are the ones where a plant uses both.

Where they are combined

On an engineered powder-coating line for electrical cabinets, reciprocators with four guns per side coat the outer faces while a single robot coats the interiors and hard-to-reach areas — with a 3D laser camera identifying the cabinet type and generating the robot path, because 3 to 24 mixed parts hang on the same 3 m beam.

That split is the general rule: the reciprocator takes the area, the robot takes the difficulty. Buying a robot to sweep a flat panel is paying for five axes you will not use.

How to decide

  • Measure what fraction of the coated area is genuinely flat and presented square to the guns. If it is most of it, start with reciprocators.
  • Count the part variants. Reciprocators handle variety through gun spacing and stroke; robots handle it through programs — and programs need someone to maintain them.
  • Check the recesses. Any face a gun cannot see from the sweep line is robot work or manual work.

Frequently asked questions

Can a reciprocator handle colour change?

Yes, through the same colour-change stack and gun hardware; the difference is motion, not fluid handling.

Is a robot always better quality?

On a flat panel, a well-set reciprocator gives an extremely even film. The robot's advantage appears where the part stops being flat.

What about vision-guided path generation?

It exists and works — one proposal used a 3D laser camera to identify the cabinet and generate the path without teaching. It earns its cost where the part mix is genuinely random.
